Local and state authorities are investigating after a dead bear was found in a plastic bag in Arlington.

A Nextdoor user posted about the grisly discovery Friday, before authorities were called.

“I was walking with my son and dog on a trail near our home in Arlington,” in the North Highlands neighborhood west of Rosslyn, the user said. “My dog got close to a big black trash bag and I noticed a bad smell and a lot of flies. I got a little closer and I saw hair and what looks like an ear. It looks like a bear’s ear.”

The Animal Welfare League of Arlington later responded to the area, found the bag and confirmed that it contained a deceased adult black bear.

“At approximately 8:30 pm on Friday, May 31, the Animal Welfare League of Arlington’s Animal Control was dispatched to the area of Spout Run Parkway near N. Adams Street for a suspected deceased dog in a plastic bag near a walking trail,” AWLA said in a statement Saturday. “Upon arrival, Deputy Swetnam identified the animal as an adult black bear. Our Chief of Animal Control Jennifer Toussaint was dispatched to the scene as well as a Conservation Police Officer from the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources to support Deputy Swetnam.”

“The bear was examined and then removed from the scene for further forensic investigation,” the organization added. “If you have any information regarding this incident, particularly any sighting of a person or persons carrying a large plastic bag in the area anytime in the past few weeks, please contact AWLA at 703-931-9241 or email animalcontrol@awla.org.”

A juvenile black bear was seen roaming through North Arlington neighborhoods on May 13. The bear was last spotted heading southwest near the East Falls Church area.
